Schema therapy is an integrative therapy initially developed by Jeffrey Young during the 1990's and further developed by a Dutch research group, who conducted a series of randomized controlled trials on schema therapy in the treatment of borderline personality disorder. There is also evidence of efficacy with other personality disorders and for depression. A group therapy format for schema therapy has also proven effective in the treatment of borderline personality and there is ongoing research on the application of schema therapy to most complex clinical presentations including eating disorders, anxiety disorders and complex trauma. There is now a large international community of therapists practicing schema therapy and there are schema therapy training programs in many cities in Europe, USA, Canada, South America and Australia. In Africa, there is our program based in Cape Town and another based in Cairo.
David Edwards is certified with the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) as a schema therapist and trainer and is a former President of the Society. He is based in Cape Town. Chantal Renton is an ISST certified supervisor and trainer who wrote her PhD on schema therapy for eating disorders. She is based in Hillcrest, Durban.
The full six-day program presents all the major components of schema therapy: experiential, relational, cognitive and behavioural and shows how they are integrated within a comprehensive case conceptualization.
This course covers the first half of the 40 hours of didactic and experiential training specified by the ISST. On completing both parts, you will be awarded the South African Diploma in Schema Therapy which is a certificate confirming that you have completed the basic workshop training as specified by the ISST. This is one component of the overall training, which includes taking part in supervised practice. This can prepare you for certification by the ISST as a schema therapist.
