Many psychologists use psychometric tests because they are familiar with them or were trained to use them, without always checking whether they are current, valid and reliable for the examinee, or supported by appropriate norms. The consequences can be serious: misinterpreted scores, incorrect diagnoses and inappropriate recommendations.

The HPCSA requires psychologists to ensure that tests are appropriate for their purpose, psychometrically sound, and supported by appropriate, up-to-date content, constructs and norms. Yet this is challenging in South Africa’s multilingual, multicultural context, marked by substantial educational and socioeconomic inequalities and limited availability of appropriately adapted tests.

This workshop will explore the challenges, provide solutions, for fair, culturally responsive cognitive assessment, particularly when assessing clients who are not first-language English speakers. It will consider how language, education and cultural factors can influence test performance and interpretation.

Based on Cognitive Test Norms: An Advanced Collation from Africa by Shuttleworth-Edwards and Truter, the workshop will provide practical guidance on using the book’s extensive normative data to support fair, ethical and defensible assessment.
